This article discusses the problem of female genital mutilation in west Africa, in particular Sierra Leone. The article focuses on the case of a 19 year old female, Fatmata Turay, who died during a mutilation ceremony, which was part of an initiation ritual into a female group. Some countries in Africa have banned the practice, however, it continues to be a blight in the area.
