In Louisiana couples with minor children have to wait a year for a divorce. The wait time is 180 days for childless couples or those with children from previous relationships. One reason for reduction to 180 days is the lack of reconciliation. It is rare for couples to change their minds. The long wait is seen as being very hard on children. A proponent of the wait time wants to keep it at a year because separation is hard on children. The separate wait times make divorce law very complicated but some lawmakers propose the time increase for everyone.
